Acceleration of tropical cyclones as a proxy for extratropical interactions: synoptic-scale patterns and long-term trends

چکیده

Abstract. It is well known that rapid changes in tropical-cyclone motion occur during interaction with extratropical waves. While the translation speed has received much attention published literature, acceleration not. Using a large data sample of Atlantic tropical cyclones, we formally examine composite synoptic-scale patterns associated tangential and curvature components their acceleration. During periods acceleration, cyclone moves poleward between an upstream trough downstream ridge developing wave packet. The two systems subsequently merge manner consistent transition. prominent promotes recurvature cyclone. In contrast, deceleration or near-zero located directly Locally, this arrangement takes form cyclone–anticyclone vortex pair. On average, peaks 18 h prior to transition, while at recurvature. These findings confirm cyclones mediated by baroclinic Furthermore, tails distribution show robust reduction over past 5 decades. We speculate these trends may reflect shift weakening Rossby

The Extratropical Transition of Tropical Cyclones

The objective is to investigate the physical processes that occur as a tropical cyclone interacts with the environment such that intensity and structure changes occur. Specific interactions being studied are with baroclinic environments in the midlatitudes during extratropical transition. During extratropical transition, radical changes to the storm structure occur as vertical wind shear and in...

Air-Sea Interactions in Tropical Cyclones

Significant progress has been made in the area of upper ocean responses and air-sea interactions during the passage of tropical cyclones (TC) since the first edition published in 1992. In terms of the upper ocean impacts on intensity, considerable attention has focused on the three-dimensional cold wake structure and the negative feedback due to ocean mixed layer cooling by shear-induced vertic...

Stratified coastal ocean interactions with tropical cyclones

Hurricane-intensity forecast improvements currently lag the progress achieved for hurricane tracks. Integrated ocean observations and simulations during hurricane Irene (2011) reveal that the wind-forced two-layer circulation of the stratified coastal ocean, and resultant shear-induced mixing, led to significant and rapid ahead-of-eye-centre cooling (at least 6 °C and up to 11 °C) over a wide s...
